Dear Adults,

You’ve decided to teach Russian letters to your child? That’s wonderful! That’s why we’ve prepared the first educational coloring book for your little ones. Yes, indeed, it’s an educational tool. A genuine one!

At LinguaMedia, we believe that the first steps into the world of sounds and letters are a very important moment. How to take these steps sequentially and correctly? What’s important to consider and not forget before engaging with your child?

  • Children explore the world through play and hands-on activities. Transform every small activity into a game, an interesting story, an emotionally enriching event, or a celebration. Soon enough, you’ll notice that your little one eagerly anticipates the next session!
  • It’s crucial to prepare everything in advance! Also, make sure your child has their own little table and a chair of the right height, along with comfortable, broad-diameter pencils or ones with finger grooves.
  • You can color our coloring pages with markers or paints. However, in our opinion, using pencils is much better.

We believe that it’s not necessary to start teaching letters too early. So, why did we include letters in our coloring book? For the simple reason that adults still end up teaching letters to their little ones, no matter how much they might be convinced to wait until at least three years old. Even better, perhaps until three and a half!

With our coloring book, you can introduce your child to almost all the letters like this:

  • Name the object in the picture. For example, носорог (rhinoceros).
  • Show an example of how to isolate the first sound in the word. Say to the child, “Посмотри: это носорог. Что мы слышим в начале слова? Мы слышим звук [н].”
  • After a while, ask the child to isolate the first sound in the word by themselves: “Посмотри: это носорог. Какой звук ты слышишь в начале слова? Правильно! Звук [н].
  • And if the child can already make this connection, say this: “Посмотри: это буква «Н». Она нам нужна, чтобы записать звук [н].”

That’s why we specifically chose images that make it easier for the child to hear the first sound in their names. What does that mean?

  • It means that for the letter O, we offer to color [о]стров instead of [а]чки or [а]безьяну.
  • It means that if the name of the picture starts with a consonant sound, it’s placed in a hard position on our coloring book. Of course, except for always soft consonants like Й, Ч, Щ. Why did we choose materials this way? Simply because children of an early age hear sounds more sensitively than adults do. A consonant in a hard or soft position is two entirely different sounds. The difference between the first sound in the word носорог and неваляшка for a child is immense! In the first case, it’s the hard sound [н], and in the second, the soft sound [н’]. On paper, we represent these two entirely different sounds with a single letter. It’s so obvious to us adults that we don’t even think about how it’s not that simple! Children of a young age find it easier to hear a consonant in a hard position. And forming a connection between the sound and the letter in such a situation is much easier for them.
  • This signifies that we’re consistent in our approach: if words don’t begin with the letter Ы, we don’t offer any pictures to color for it. We don’t suggest coloring сыр simply because isolating the sound in the middle of a word is a completely different task. It’s more challenging for a child, and we don’t want to confuse them at this stage; we’re progressing systematically.

This is why it’s important to follow this plan for almost all the letters. But why almost? Because our language and the way sounds are represented in writing with letters are not that simple to fit into just one straightforward algorithm.

  • We have diphthongs – letters that represent two sounds. These are Я, Ю, Е, Ё. When introducing your child to these letters, simply say, “Это буква «Я», давай раскрасим яблоню“.
  • We have soft and hard signs, for which we’ve created funny little characters. We think that it’s too early to draw a door (дверь) next to a soft sign and tell the child that we use a soft sign at the end of this word. Or to draw a staircase (подъез) next to a hard sign. The child can’t read or write yet. They will easily learn all of this in due time. There’s no need to rush them!

We really hope that this introduction hasn’t exhausted you too much, dear adults!

Wishing you and your little one successful and engaging sessions!
